Aristotle s Role Of Luck And Chance As Causes For Change

When discussing probability, a text of my previous reading came to mind. Within the lecture Physics II, much of Aristotle’s work is concerned with providing a definition for various events and subjects, and as such, identifying the types of causes for each event is an important step in accomplishing this goal. Aristotle specifically investigates the role of luck and chance as causes of change. Although we commonly speak of luck or chance as being a cause, Aristotle purposefully refrains from including them in his explanation of causes. When giving an account of our observable world, I agree with Aristotle in that there is no place for luck and chance as causes of events, yet I believe they do have a role, namely in predicting future events. Aristotle specifically separates causes into four different categories, material cause, formal cause, efficient cause, and final cause. He defines these causes as â€Å"that from which, as a constituent present in it, †¦ the form i.e., the pattern, †¦ the source of the primary principle of change, †¦ something’s end† . Respectively, these describe what something is made of, the form or pattern to which is corresponds, the original source of change (closest to what we would associate with a â€Å"cause†), and the purpose of the change. Almost, Doran, Hall and Laschinger (2010) linked antecedent variables to intra-group conflict among nurses. The purpose was to develop and test a theoretical model, which linked antecedent variables to intragroup conflict among nurses, followed by conflict management and two outcome variables (Almost, et al., 2010). The authors used Cox’s (2008) Critical Theory, where conflict is deemed a process, with antecedents and outcomes. The method of the study was a predictive non-experimental survey that tested the theoretical model. The sample for the study included 275 acute care nurses who were chosen from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) registry. Six-hundred nurses were randomly selected from the CNO, but for the purpose of maintaining accuracy in estimates the number was decreased. Almost et al. (2010) used six different tools in the study. The Core Self-evaluation Scale ([CCS]; Bono Judge, 2003). The CSS has twelve items, which use a five-point Likert-type scale. The scale measured self-esteem, generalized self-efficacy, locus of control, and neuroticism. Almost et al. (2010) report that the scale has previously demonstrated a Cronbach’s alpha ranging from 0.81 to 0.87. The authors used the Unit Technology Scale ([UTS]; Leatt Schneck, 1981), which had 21 items and used a five-point Likert-type scale to measure the complexity of nursing care on the unit. On September 11, 2001, George W. Bush delivered his 9/11 Address to the Nation at 8:30 PM to all Americans. This speech, broadcasted throughout the nation from within the Oval Office just hours after the terrorist hijacking and the crash on the Twin Towers, reassured American citizens during a time of devastation and need of proper leadership. Through rhetoric intended to convey strength and the actions America had already taken to combat this tragedy, Bush instilled hope in the American people and provided them with a sense of unification. Throughout the speech, a major rhetorical theme are the anaphoric phrases. As America is the opposite of terrorists, America therefore must also be the opposite of evil, love. He quotes psalm 23 as, â€Å"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me† (Kohn).
